Winston-Salem/Forsyth County’s City-County Planning and Inspections departments officially merged yesterday, July 1, 2013. The move was made in an effort to streamline operations. From the Winston-Salem Journal:
The combined City-County Planning and Development Services Department has 65 employees. Paul Norby, previously the director of planning, is now the director of the new department. Chris Murphy, the former acting director of inspections, is the deputy director…
The merger of the departments had two drivers — a recommendation from a citizens group and anticipated savings.
Garrity said that the Development Review Advisory Committee, which included builders, made several recommendations last year about how the city could be more efficient and effective for customers.
“They recommended having a point person for all development review items so that there was more of a centralized coordination between departments,” Garrity said of one of the group’s suggestions.
