Apartment Industry’s Best and Brightest Celebrated at PTAA’s Diamond Awards

Over 500 members and guests of The Piedmont Triad Apartment Association (PTAA) gathered to celebrate individuals, communities, and supplier partners from their membership who were nominated and won recognition for achievements in the multifamily apartment industry in 2018.

Individual professionals and apartment community on-site teams were nominated by peers and supervisors, then submitted applications which were evaluated by multiple judges in the apartment industry in areas outside of North Carolina. Finalists were chosen using a scoring matrix comprised of financial performance, community composite, personal performance, professional development and recommendation letters. Leasing Professional and Community finalists were subject to additional evaluation in the form of a secret or scheduled shop.

Supplier Partners were voted on by PTAA members who are apartment owner/operators. The companies receiving the highest number of votes in each category submitted applications and recommendation letters for review by impartial judges spanning multiple operational roles in the multifamily industry. The number of votes and a quantitative score from the applications were weighted equally to determine the winner. The Piedmont Triad Apartment Association has been recognizing member organizations with the annual Diamond Awards ceremony for more than 20 years.

This year Phillips Management Group and their communities collectively raised more than 78,000 meals. They were awarded the Clyde Fitzgerald Owners Cup, named for the late former CEO of Second Harvest Food Bank, for 2018.

It’s a Two-fer: Diamond Awards and National Apartment Housing Day

Tonight is PTAA’s annual Diamond Awards banquet, which is a combination of the Oscar, Emmy and Tony awards for the local apartment industry. The event is SOLD OUT which means we’ll have 530 people celebrating the best and the brightest the apartment industry has to offer.

Today is also National Apartment Housing Day and by highlighting it at tonight’s Diamond Awards PTAA will be joining the 170 apartment associations affiliated with the National Apartment Association (NAA) to promote the tremendous contribution that the apartment industry makes in housing Americans. Here’s how the National Apartment Association describes it:

National Apartment Housing Day is the apartment housing industry’s opportunity to showcase its significant impact in communities across America by:

  • Contributing to the nation’s economic strength. Apartments and their residents contribute $1.3 trillion to the economy and support 12.3 million jobs.
  • Growing career opportunities. Today, 469,000 apartment professionals work in fields such as property management, leasing and maintenance. Beyond supporting today’s 20 million apartment households, new career opportunities await – by one estimate, 4.4 million new renter households will be formed within the next decade.
  • Giving back to communities. In 2016, the industry infused $158 million in philanthropic and charitable contributions into communities across the nation.

“Today we welcome America home,” says National Apartment Association President & CEO Robert Pinnegar, CAE. “Apartments offer Americans flexibility and choice, but current demand for apartments outstrips supply. A continued supply of affordable housing requires supportive legislation and regulations that make it easier to construct and rehabilitate apartments. That, more than anything else, will help keep rents reasonable for Americans.”

PTAA Members to Celebrate National Apartment Housing Day at Diamond Awards

On April 5, 2016 the Piedmont Triad Apartment Association (PTAA) will hold its annual Diamond Awards banquet to celebrate and acknowledge the “best of the best” in the Triad’s multi-family housing industry. These awards acknowledge the exemplary contributions in 2015 of companies and individuals who work in an industry that serves over a third of the people who live in the Piedmont Triad.

The date for this year’s Diamond Awards coincides with National Apartment Housing Day – #aptday – a program organized by the National Apartment Association to recognize the vital role the apartment industry plays in supplying quality housing throughout the country and the tremendous impact the industry has on the economy.

“With one-third of Americans now renting their homes, there has never been a more exciting time to be a part of the apartment housing industry,” said Doug Culkin, CAE, President & CEO of the National Apartment Association. “It’s time to celebrate the new American Dream.”

With an expected attendance of 475 people, PTAA’s Diamond Awards is the largest event of the year for the local apartment industry.

Industry Facts

The American Dream is changing; more than one-third of Americans rent their homes. Of them, 42 percent—or 37 million people—lease apartments.

Members of the Piedmont Triad Apartment Association own/manage over 58,000 housing units throughout the region.

Apartments and their residents contribute $1.3 trillion to the national economy each year. That’s 12.3 million jobs in construction, operations, leasing, management and skilled trades along with all the local businesses supported by apartments and their residents.

#aptday

PTAA Announces 2011 Diamond Award Winners

On March 20, 2012 over 300 industry professionals attended PTAA’s 2011 Diamond Awards banquet held at the Embassy Suites hotel in Greensboro.  PTAA President Mindy McCorkle presided over a wonderful evening event dedicated to recognizing the best that the apartment industry has to offer in the Piedmont Triad.

Contrary to what many might think these awards are not a popularity contest.  Individual award nominees were required to:

  • Submit paperwork with details about their job or community. Including things like closing ratios for leasing professionals; community turnover ratio for service professionals; professional designations they hold and continuing education courses they’ve taken throughout the year; and just about any information relevant to how they do their jobs.
  • Provide a letter of recommendation from their immediate supervisor.
  • Leasing professionals were shopped by a 3rd party company that specializes in evaluating leasing operations.
  • All other professional category nominees were interviewed by a panel of judges made up of professionals who were not working at properties in the running for the category
  • Each step of the process was scored and based on those scores the finalists were selected.

Nominees in the “Community” categories had to:

  • Submit paperwork with details like the size of their community, number of employees, total traffic, total gross and net lease sales, turnover ratio, etc.
  • Each community was also inspected by a judging panel made up of vendor partner members and owner/manager members who did not have a property nominated for the award in the category.
  • Each step of the process was scored and based on those scores the finalists were selected.

Nominees for the Vendor Partner awards were all nominated and voted on by members from the management community. Finalists were the top vote getters in their respective categories, and the winner is the top vote-getter in each category.

As you can see all of the nominees were subjected to rigorous judging and as a result each category was highly competitive, with some winners being separated from the other finalists by a mere point or two.  All of the finalists should take great pride in their accomplishments for 2011!
