This year PTAA’s executive director Jon Lowder is once again trying to raise money for our annual summer food drive, and if you’re willing to donate to Second Harvest Food Bank of NWNC you can rent his time for any number of reasons. Even better, if you make the donation before June 30 then your money will be automatically matched dollar-for-dollar by an anonymous donor at Second Harvest, so it’s doubled! Not sure what you can do with his time? Well, here’s what he’s written to give you some ideas (you can find full details here):
Last year I ventured to raise money for Second Harvest Food Bank of NWNC by doing something called Jon’s Pentathlon of Pain. This year I’m focusing on raising funds in the month of June because Second Harvest has a program that matches every dollar donated until June 30.That means if you donate $10 it magically turns into $20.
So here’s how it’s going to work: if you have a challenge, task, stunt that you want me to do then send me a description of what you want me to do (see instructions below), and how much you’re willing to donate to Second Harvest to have me do it. Because time is short the project/stunt doesn’t have to be completed in June, but the donation does have to be made and we can arrange for it to be done later.
I reserve the right to not accept any challenge or project – I’m not getting piercings or tattoos folks – but I listen to any offer.
Here are some ideas:
- Hire me for a day (I’m sure we can figure out something useful I can do)
- A writing project
- A podcast
- An embarrassing video (here’s an example from last year)
- Wear your company’s schwag (hat, shirt, etc.) for a day

As you may know, PTAA’s Summer Food Drive kicked off on May 1st and we’ve been delivering food collecton boxes to apartment communities throughout the Triad so that they can participate. Details on how you can participate are below, but before we get to that we need to point out an important piece of information: Any money you raise for Second Harvest between now and June 30 will be matched by a donor. So every dollar you give magically turns into $2!
Of course we want you to participate in any way you can, and Second Harvest definitely needs food and cash donations, but if you are going to make a financial donation then you might try to make it in June so that the money is doubled and has a maximum effect!

New This Year – Community Level Competition!
We’ve always had a competition between management companies to see which can raise the most food/money, but this year we’ve added two new levels of competition:
The community with over 200 units that donates the most will win Breakfast on the Go for its residents.
The community with under 200 units that donates the most will win Breakfast on the Go for its residents.

Once again we are partnering with the Winston-Salem Dash, the Greensboro Grasshoppers and WXII12 to promote the food drive to the general public. We will be collecting food at the Dash game on July 15 and the Grasshoppers game on July 22. Keep an eye out for the ads when they run on WXII12 in July, and if you’d like to bring your families out for a great time you can purchase tickets from PTAA to attend.

As many of you know the Piedmont Triad Apartment Association does a food drive for Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina every year. Typically we concentrate our drive on the summer months, but what many of our members don’t realize is that the drive actually runs year-round.
We’re bringing this up because we’ve been contacted by a couple of member properties that are running holiday food collection drives in an effort to engage their residents while helping feed the hungry in the local community. They contacted us to get some advice on setting it up – of course we’re happy to help! – and it occurred to us that other properties might like to do the same thing. So, if you would like to do a food drive for the holidays then please feel free to give us a call and we’ll help coordinate it with Second Harvest. What a great way to serve the community while also engaging your residents!
We also want to remind you that we have a competition to see which management company can raise the most food during the year. We count all the food each management company and their communities raise from January 1 through December 31 and award the company that raises the most with the Owner’s Cup at our annual Diamond Awards banquet the following March. This is important to know because any food you raise during a holiday food drive, or any other food drive you do for that matter, will count towards your total for the year so please let us know how much you collect!
I want to take this opportunity to thank two of our member companies for allowing me and our Food Drive Committee Chair, Dale Holder of Apartment Finder, to embarrass ourselves in exchange for significant donations to Second Harvest Food Bank of NWNC.
Today Dale and I will be at the main entrance to Robinhood Court Apartments and Villas at 4 p.m. wearing “prom dresses” in exchange for a $550 donation to Second Harvest, plus $5 for everyone who stops in to visit while we’re there. In my case the only dress that would fit is something that a typical high school girl’s grandmother might wear to church on Sunday so we’ll call it a prom-ish dress, but Dale is sure to be bedazzling.
And I’d be remiss if I didn’t thank Blue Ridge Companies and their Burke Ridge Crossing community for donating $250 to Second Harvest last month in exchange for me wearing a tutu, a tiara and high heels, having their corporate slogan painted on my back and then jumping into the Burke Ridge Crossing pool.
Many of our member companies are very active in our food drive and do an amazing job raising funds, food and awareness for Second Harvest, but I just wanted to take a quick second to thank these companies for so enthusiastically throwing me and Dale under the proverbial bus for a great cause:)
